Juan
Carlo Suazo was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in August 1963. He remains
deeply attached to his native country and its influence informs every
aspect of his artwork today. Juan Carlo is a self-taught artist and began
working with clay at the age of 12 after discovering a pit of red clay in
a baseball field behind his home in Puerto Rico.
At the age of 19 he purchased his very own kiln and began creating ceramic
masks, jewelry and figurines. Juan Carlo has presented his work at Craft
Fairs, Flea Markets, Arts & Crafts Shows, Galleries, solo shows and has
conducted several lectures and workshops. His work has been represented by
the Latino Arts Community, including solo exhibitions at Cemi Underground,
NY; Taina’s Touch Arts Connection, NY; River Bank State Park, NY and
Colalex Gallery, NY. (Permanent Display).
Juan Carlo is currently working with papier-mâché making Vejigantes
(Puerto Rican carnival masks), incorporating natural products with
recycled products. Juan Carlo has always been inspired by his Puerto Rican
heritage and it is always expressed in his work. He inspires to give
people an appreciation of the colors and culture of Puerto Rico.
Today, Juan Carlo is an acclaimed “ Papier-Mâché Artist" at the highest
level. His work through perseverance and diligence has won him lots of
attention and notoriety.
Juan Carlo lives in New York where he works full time as an artist.
He says “If I'm not passionate about it, I don't do it, period”.
