Puerto Rican Artist - Mia Hernandez

Mia Hernandez
Born in  the urban city of Brooklyn, NY to Puerto Rican parents. My mother is from Ponce and my father is from Fajardo, Puerto Rico. I currently reside in Queens, NY, have a 17 year old daughter and have been married for 18 wonderful years.

It was with my family that I first learned to appreciate the importance of an artistic community. Being surrounded by so many creative people provided me with a nurturing artistic environment that encouraged me to explore and learn without boundaries.

While traveling through Europe and the Caribbean I had the opportunity to visit the worlds most treasured pieces in history like … the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Michael Angelo’s David and to view art by Obed Garcia, Elizabeth Baez, Frida Kahlo, Goya, and so much more.

I do not have formal training and did not attend any art classes. My family and life experience is what leads my hand and nourishes my creativity. My family plays a big role in inspiring me along with some of my favorite artists like, Frida Kahlo, Goya and Picasso just to name a few. I enjoy experimenting with various mixed mediums, acrylic paint, fabric, wood, ceramics, canvas boards etc.

Dona BorinquenaMy favorite subjects to paint are of culture (Hispanic-Africano and Taino), emotion (Loss-satisfaction-serenity) and spirituality (Santeria-Latin folk Catholicism and Christianity). According to art lore, an artist is supposed to focus on one style of painting and develop a "signature" style. This may ring true for many but I can’t seem to be able to give in to it. I enjoy sampling various existences and experiences. My paintings are a record of my experiences and ideas, an expression of heart and personal truth.

If I had to sum up my inspirations into one word it would be “Life”. The driving force behind my work is very personal. It is an influence of family, culture and a deep sense of spirituality. My mother's Caribbean ways has forever permeated my sense of self, my thoughts and my spirituality. It was after the passing of my Grandfather that I once again found my self La Ventanavalue and started to pick up my paint brushes. I admired his artistic creativity and passion for his art. He would paint on Palm tree leaves, seashells, wood, glass and canvas.

Everything nature provided was a piece of art to him. He loved Puerto Rico and was grateful for the things it provided for him and his family. He painted Puerto Rico landscapes by using various mixed mediums eventually creating three dimensional pieces of art. “I believe that if you do not try you will never know and the only risk you miss is the one you don’t take”.
