Ed Hoppe was the photographer for World Book
Encyclopedia and Science Year Book for about nine years. He was their only
in-house photographer and worked with over 50 artists and many editors. He
made great friends and still keeps in touch with them.
Ed decided to open his own advertising studio in Chicago. He photographed
many product shots and had a great client base to start his new studio.
Receiving both advertising and the editorial jobs was an nice change; In
fact one of his first photo assignments was from an artist friend that
worked with him at World Book. He gave Ed a couple of assignments to
Puerto Rico; Ed found himself hooked on the island, it’s people, their
culture...and of course, their food, “arroz con gandules” ... After many
years of working in Chicago, It occurred to him that he could work almost
any where and wanted to scale down anyway.
Then, Ed decided to follow an old dream that he had: he always gravitated
to the north woods, knowing that someday he would make "the big move" ...
He constructed a studio in the North woods of Wisconsin, in the town of
Boulder Junction, famous for its fishing lakes, and majestic woods. Ed has
been based in Wisconsin for about twenty years now.
Ed and his wife Rosa visit Puerto Rico frequently. Ed has clients on the
island and has had many photo assignments there. Rosa is from a small town
on the western coast of the island. She is a stylist and assists Ed in
designing greeting cards & posters and does the creative writing. She was
a teacher in the bilingual programs in Chicago. Their bicultural and
bilingual skills in (English and Spanish) are reflected in their creative
work.

Ed’s love and admiration for Puerto Rico is reflected in the diverse
subjects used in his photos: flora, fauna, food, history, towns... all
related to the culture and it’s people.
When Ed visits Puerto Rico he likes visiting different towns in addition
to his assignments. He is always shooting stock for his files and has help
promote various towns with his digital photography & layouts.
He is most inspired and attracted by the Campesino or Jibaro in the rural
areas: their rustic hands, interesting faces... but most of all, for the
simple beauty of their hearts. (See PUERTO RICO Gallery-People.)
