Arnaldo Roche: Brotherhood
Arnaldo Roche is the pre-eminent expressionist painter in Puerto
Rico. He lived in Chicago for most of the 1980s, and studied at
The School of the Art Institute at that time. His vibrant and
impassioned canvases, usually realized on a very large scale,
are created by using live models and a wide range of objects for
his typically frottage technique of rubbing shapes as a starting
point for most of his pictures. This exhibition of approximately
35 works is Roche's first major solo exhibition in Chicago since
an early survey of his drawings and paintings was presented at
the Chicago Cultural Center in 1987. In the past two decades,
Roche has achieved increasing prominence and has had major group
exhibitions around the United States, as well as solo
exhibitions and monographic catalogs in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and is
co-sponsored by the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance, Chicago, and the
National Museum of Mexican Art.

Palabración by:Cecilia Méndez
Palabración is an exhibit inspired by words and the reality that
languages—spoken, read, written, and implied—are tools of power.
The objects, installations, drawings, and animated films in this
exhibit are a meditation on the invention, interpretation, and
potential of languages-- English, Spanish, and Spanglish.
Inspired by tools and everyday objects, artist Cecilia Mendez
works with letters, symbols, and codes to search for ways in
which meaning through language is made. In many of the works,
tools, especially kitchen tools, emerge as metaphors for the
human body, anthropomorphized in both two and three dimensions.
Identity, personal histories, and food are other sources of
inspiration for Méndez.

In The Heights began as an original musical conceived by
Lin-Manuel Miranda during his sophomore year at Wesleyan
University. Upon graduating and returning home to New York,
Miranda collaborated with director Thomas Kail to rework and
restage the campus hit for a larger audience. That's how they
captured the interest of producers Jill Furman, Kevin McCollum
and Jeffrey Seller, whose previous work on Broadway included
Rent, Avenue Q and The Drowsy Chaperone. After more workshops,
more collaborators, and a stint at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in
Connecticut, the musical found a home at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts
Theatre. Seven years after the idea was first born, In The
Heights was ready for its New York theatrical debut.
During its Off-Broadway run at 37 Arts, In The Heights quickly
became an audience phenomenon and a critical success. The
response was unprecedented; the musical was luring both
traditional and non-traditional theatergoers and garnering a
huge cache of accolades, including the Outer Critics Circle
Award and the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical. After over
200 performances, In The Heights played its final Off-Broadway
show on July 15th, 2007, in order to begin preparations for a
move to Broadway.
